Wide and deep orthopedic Shoes
In the same way that there are shoe sizes that relate to the length of the foot (and the shoe), there is also a range of classifications that relate to the width of the foot (and the shoe).
There is a different classification system for both men’s and women’s shoe widths and examples are given below.
Men's wide shoes generally fall into the range of
- F - Wide
- G - Wider
- H – Extra wide
- HH – Extra extra wide
Women's wide shoes generally fall into the range of
- E - Wide
- EE - Wider
- EEE – Extra wide
- EEEE - Extra extra wide
- EEEEE – Very extra wide
How to determine your shoe size
Most orthopedic, orthotic, comfort fit and easy fit shoe suppliers will use the classifications listed above, but before you can order a pair of shoes you need to establish what "shoe fit" your feet actually are.
You do this by measuring the length, width (at the widest point) and circumference of the foot (around the ball of the foot) and then relating these measurements to a fitting chart. Virtually all on-line retailers not only have these charts, but also printable versions of them, on their websites.
This allows you to take a step by step approach to establishing exactly what size of shoe you should be wearing.
It makes the ordering process simple and it also means that you purchase what is actually the correct shoe size, rather than what "you believe" to be the correct shoe size based on trying a pair of shoes on.
Many good on-line retailers offer the facility to order a different size of shoe for each foot. As most people do in fact have a variation in foot size, this is a valuable option to have.
